what to consider when selecting an artexer or plasterer

Even seasoned experts in other trades and home owners who are extremely practical will sometimes still admit defeat when it comes to a professional finish for a plastered wall or ceiling!

Plasterers can be used to build floors, outdoor walls and perhaps most obviously, walls and ceilings. The two most common types of plastering are solid plastering and fibrous plastering. Solid Plastering involves creating smooth finishes, for example on ceilings, walls (both inside and outside) and driveways. Fibrous plastering is ornamental, for example ceiling roses and mouldings.

Many plasterers will also be able to dry line, which is the term giving to the construction of an internal wall or floor partition using plasterboard.

A qualified plasterer should have either an NVQ level 1, 2 or 3 in plastering or a SVQ level 3 in plastering. If you are hiring a plasterer to work on a construction site they should also hold a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme card (CSCS) which shows that as well as sufficient skills in plastering itself, they have undertaken the relevant health and safety training. These qualifications are relatively new to the industry so bear in mind that there will also be several plasterers available who do not have these qualifications but do have years of experience which should be backed up with a good local reputation and recommendations.

Remember, with any tradesperson it’s always worth considering the following:-

  • Is the price given for a quotation or an estimate and does it include VAT
  • Does the price include all materials and is it for the completed job
  • Will the completed job be guaranteed and if so, in what way
  • Is the tradesperson fully insured
