Newton Abbot, with its population of approximately 19,000 people, is an old market town built around the 12th century. It’s perhaps best known for its racecourse and the area has a tradition of racing since it was first recognised in 1855. Steeplechase horse racing operates throughout the year.
In 2005 the new £3 million leisure centre was opened in the area providing a wealth of activities including a state of the art gym. The centre aims to provide its services to a catchment area of some 55,000 people.
This lively, bustling town, offers a whole range of markets, historic buildings, and some fantastic parks. it even has a working malthouse, which is popular with visitors who are looking to discover the traditional side of the area.
