what to consider when selecting an electrician

Electricians install, test and maintain electrical systems for both residential and commercial property; however some may choose to specialise in one particular area. The work of an electrician may include, for example, a complete rewire of a house, repairing damaged cables or installing new sockets and additional wiring.

An electrician uses a variety of tools to complete their work. These include wire cutters, screwdrivers, pliers, hacksaws and soldering irons. They will also use a variety of testing tools while doing their work. Electricians have to be good at reading plans, doing projects, using tools and being able to see and know the different colours of wiring.

Unless you are a qualified electrician, it is illegal to install or repair any electrical installations around your property which are fixed to the building itself. These may include, for example, sockets or fuse boxes. A qualified electrician will be registered by a government approved body, for example The Electrical Safety Council (NICEIC), The Electrical Contractors association (ECA) or the Joint Industry Boad (JIB).

You can, however, tackle some basic electrical work to help save money.

Remember, with any tradesperson it’s always worth considering the following:-

  • Is the price given for a quotation or an estimate and does it include VAT
  • Does the price include all materials and is it for the completed job
  • Will the completed job be guaranteed and if so, in what way
  • Is the tradesperson fully insured
